Decorating a Mantel {Guest Post by Houzz!}

Happy Mantel Monday!! Today you are in for a BIG treat because Becky from Houzz (yes, THAT Houzz!!) is here to talk about, you guessed it, MANTELS!
---------
Hello everyone! My name is Becky and I'm a contributor at Houzz, a home design site focused on helping design professionals and homeowners manage the remodeling and decorating process. Thanks so much to Emily for having me!

Mantels are a topic close to my heart; even in a home without a working fireplace, a mantel is on my must-have list. I love to look to blogs like 52 Mantels, design books, magazines and of course our database on Houzz for "mantelscape" inspiration. One of my favorite design books that came out this last year is Patina Style, written by husband and wife team Brooke and Steven Giannetti, who coined this term to describe the look of cleverly mixed weathered and vintage objects they favor. Thus, I thought I'd combine my love of mantel arrangements and Patina Style for this post. I've collected a few images that bring big patina style to mantels, combining unique objects in pleasing compositions.

Medina Residence traditional family room
This equestrian-themed mantel arrangement enhances the traditional touches in this cozy family room. It has a classic oil portrait of a horse in the center, surrounded by a mix of vintage trophies. I wonder if anyone ever sipped a mint julep out of any of these during a Kentucky Derby party?

Mirrors in unique vintage frames reflect light and provide the perfect backdrop for a patinated urn and antique books in this traditional living room. Even the sticks in the urn pick up on the hues of the objects. Tarnished metal and distressed covers add to the appeal.

A monochromatic color scheme ties these otherwise disparate objects together. Why not mix a bird, an antique clock and a wooden shoe mold together? Another great aspect of this arrangement is that the mirror reflects the artwork on the opposite wall, which incorporates it into the composition.

Thanks so much for sharing with us today, Becky!
