Chalkboard Top Table

This post should be called What WON'T She Chalkboard Paint?! Seriously, that can of paint has seen me through many a project.

Which leads me to...

Public Service Announcement: Chalkboard paint is highly addictive and may cause extreme bouts of productivity. Said productivity is limited solely to finding things to paint. With chalkboard paint. Any children caught standing still for any length of time could find themselves painted. In chalkboard paint. Any shoes left out by husbands may fall victim to a new paint job. A chalkboard paint job.

This has been a public service announcement.

Excuse my sad before shot. I decided to paint this table after I'd finished putting away the Christmas tree and ridding my house of all things December. You can see from bare shelves and table, I had a lot of Christmas out this year!

I purchased that sad, brown table at Goodwill last year. Last year!! And, I've lived with it since. When I purchased it, I had every intention of painting it. But, instead, I just moved it on in and left it alone.

But, after Christmas, when the house was transitioning back to normal, completely this project became a reality and not just an item on my someday-I'll-do list.

I don't really think you need a tutorial for this. I didn't use a fancy painting technique. Instead I:
1) painted the entire table, except the top, in eggshell paint (behr brand, leftover from out interior trim).
2) while that dried, I brushed on one coat of chalkboard paint.
3) Second coat of white paint.
4) Second coat of chalkboard paint.
5) Sanded the table, minus the top, with fine & medium sandpaper until I'd achieved my desired amount of distressing.

The end! Notice I didn't pre-sand, prime or seal. I'm so naughty like that.

I have to be honest, I love having a chalkboard top table! I am already envisioning turning this into a buffet for a fun party! Or, I may decide to write lengthy to-do lists love notes to the hubs. Endless are the possibilities!

Have I convinced you to paint a table-top with chalkboard paint yet??

Marking things off my projects list feels pretty, darn good!

  3. That is a great idea! We should be moving in a few months and are getting a new dinning room set so I have been tossing around ideas of what to do with my old one. I knew I wanted it to be a craft table and I wanted to mount bins for all the kids craft stuff. I now know what I am going to do with the top! Thanks so much and I can't wait to see what my finished product looks like!

  6. Hmmm...maybe I'll do the kitchen table! Chalk would keep the kids busy while they waited for dinner to be ready! Or would that distract them at the the wrong time? Hmm....I'll let you know what I decide to paint!
