Less Tricks, More Treats

I promised in my Caramel Apple Cake Pops post that I would give a tutorial for the "Less Tricks" and "More Treats" signs. Well hereya go, friends.

My husband had some leftover plywood in the garage, which he so kindly cut into 9x12 inch squares for me. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with them, but knew I wanted them. Ever have moments like that? They sat in my office for a week before I had an idea. Enter the "Less Tricks" and "More Treats" signs.

I've said before that I'm not really into gory Halloween. I'm more into the fun, costumed, let's beg the neighbors for candy, Halloween. I guess the emphasis for me is on the treats, not the tricks.

These signs utilize a painting technique I've been dying to experiment with. Spray paint through burlap! I'm sure I'm not the first to do this, but I haven't ever seen it done, so it's new to me.

I started by dry brushing one of the boards with watered down black paint and the other board with watered-down white paint. This was a 30 second process. Seriously. If it takes you any longer, you may suffer from perfectionism. I, clearly, do not.

***(This is where you're thinking "wow, awesome pictures, Emily". Admit it.)

Then, I laid a scrap of burlap, cut slightly larger, on the black board and sprayed gold metallic paint on to the burlap. I made sure to do a very saturated coat.

I had to peek. Sure enough, it worked! The burlap gave it a really cool pattern and the process was super simple. I love it when things work out!

I repeated the process, using the same scrap of burlap. The second board was trickier because I couldn't see where I had/had not sprayed the gold. But, it all worked out. I just peeked several times through the process to verify that I was getting an even coat.

Bonus, I was left with a cool square of gold burlap. I'll be doing something with that soon, don't you worry!

Here's a close up of what the painted boards look like:

Cool treatment, huh?

Let's see of lil' punkin likes it...

Hmmm....

Well, she's sort of underwhelmed.

But, she's 8 months, so her opinion doesn't count.

Unless, of course, it's more on target with MY opinion, in which case her opinion counts.

Moving on...

I cut my words, bats and banner out of black and white vinyl, using my silhouette. I chose vinyl because I may want to use these boards for something else in the future and vinyl is oh-so easy to remove.

I may place these signs on my mantel...

Or, maybe I'll use them on a dessert table, like I showed you in my Caramel Apple Cake Pops tutorial.

The possibilities are endless, really.

I'm linking up this week!

Enjoy!
