Fabric Flower {Embellished} Onesie

Remember on Tuesday when I told you about the baby shower I attended last weekend? It was such a sweet event! On the invitations, we were asked to bring a onesie that represented our personality. Fun idea, huh?? And, what represents my personality? Getting my craft on! Today I've got an easy tutorial for a custom, girly and oh-so-sweet embellished onesie. Of course, this could be adapted for any number of items: t-shirts, headbands, bags. If you can sew on it, you can add a sweet flower.** 

**that's an unconfirmed claim. I've only ever tried it on a onesie. But, I'm willing to bet my above statement holds true ;)

Where were we? Oh yes. A tutorial. Here goes: 

1) I started with a scrap of knit fabric because I thought that might cut down on the fray factor. To create my flower, I traced 5 circles onto the knit fabric with the lid of my spray glue (but, you can use whatever round object you've got on hand). The flower will be as large as your circle template. 2) Cut out each circle with pinking shears. 3) Place one circle as the base and fold the remaining circles into triangles. 4) Layer the four triangles around the base circle. 5) Take a needle and thread and sew the pieces together, starting from the underside. Make sure and grab each triangle tip with your needle. 6) Sew on a button in the middle of your flower.

Now you have a fabric flower!

7) To make the leaves, freehand a leaf shape onto two coordinating fabrics and cut those out. Then add fusible web to the back of each leaf. 8) After deciding on the position of your flower, iron the leaves into place. 9) When the leaves are secured to the shirt, stitch around each one using a larger needle and four strands of embroidery thread. I wanted this to have a hand-stitched look, but you could also just stitch around the leaves using a sewing machine. 10) When the leaves are in place, position the flower where you want it. 11) The final step is to stitch the flower in place. Stitch it in four corners of the flower so it will lay flat against the onesie.

That's it!! If you know how to sew on a button, you can whip this up in no time at all!

At the shower, the hostesses hung each onesie up and made the mom-to-be guess who brought each one. Kind of glad I wasn't the one doing the guessing! I have to say that my onesie was only one of three that she got right with the first guess. That could be a good thing or a bad thing, I suppose. ;)
