A Scrappy Hairclip & Headband

When my daughter was little(r), a friend gave us a Fall headband made from a sweater sleeve and fabric scraps. Brilliant! I have no idea where she got it, but it was such a clever idea for chic repurposing. One look at that headband, and I knew I could create my own spin.

Wanna know how I used an old (goodwill find) sweater to make an instant headband?

Yep, that's it. Cut. Finished. No sewing, glueing, stapling or cursing. This particular sweater is black, baggy and fairly stretchy. The size and stretch of the sweater will determine whose head the band will fit. But, I imagine using a thinner knit with a lot more stretch would yield you a headband for a kid.

An adult headband? Hmm. You'd probably have to utilize the sweater's hem and bust out the sewing (or glueing) skills.

I decided to make a hair clip for this band that is removable so I can change the clip/band combos at my whim and so my lil' punkin can wear the clip in her hair when she outgrows the band. C'mon, you know I like to keep my options open.

I've simplified this flower tute for you in pictures. These are very similar to the flowers I made for my Winter Wreath, minus the button and with two added leaves. I cut three size rounds from various felts and flannel. I like the felt because it adds a bit of support and I like the flannel because it doesn't fray a ton.

And, you can like whatever fabrics you like for whatever reasons you like them.

(yes, that was my official permission granted)

I then cut two freeform leaves to add to my flower. When all my pieces were cut, I stacked my circles and stitched an x in the middle using thick embroidery thread in a contrasting color. Then I added my leaves and stitched a chain down the center of each. I swapped to a thinner thread to attach the hair clip. And, that's it! Now my clip can easily be attached to the headband or worn as it!

Headband.

Or hair clip.

You decide!

    1. Terry, I'm replying here in case anyone else has the same question!

The sweater did not unravel, but it does fray a bit. The edges will be raw, but I think it adds to the charm. She's worn it twice and it looks exactly the same as these pictures! The original gifted headband has also stood the test of curious baby hands!

      Thanks for stopping by!
